Ecological Issues Project
Human Bear Conflict
In this project we investigated and researched an ecological issue. I chose human bear conflict. Through my research I found that diversion feeding sights, community outreach and education, and bear proof trashcans are the most affective plans to minimize and eliminate human bear conflict. I then proceeded to research how to accomplish these plans. I found that most plans require employees and volunteers and founds from some sort of organization such as the City of Durango and Waste Management. I made a professional poster and showed many maps about where my diversion feeding sights could be located.
My most strong strategy is diversion feeding. Diversion feeding sights are when the community donated their waste and there compost that fits into the diet of the black bear to Waste Management and the DOW and employees of the DOW would drive the donations up to a sight above Perins Peak (many bears are coming out of this area into residential areas). This would draw the bears back up into there natural habitat and help eliminate habitat fragmentation.
A skill that I developed during this project was using Excel. Before this project I could not use Excel because I did not understand how to use it. Now I can make graphs, tables, and other ways of displaying my data through a computer. I learned that when a animal comes into a residential area it is most likely because of habitat fragmentation. This is when humans go into an habitat of another spices and split it up with our residential buildings and other residential areas. This leaves a habitat weak and forces the animal to come into residential areas for their recourses. I now see how much we have an effect on nature even of we are just doing what is natural and wanting to ampliphy our habitat. Even the smallest of things can cause a death of an animal. In the future I will push my family and friends to be bear smart and take responsibility of their actions to help eliminate ecological issues.
